Cinco de Mayo is on its way to town, and we have a ticket giveaway to Barrio Boombox, one of the hottest (figuratively, but probably also literally, once all of those hips get moving) Cinco de Mayo parties in Austin, thanks to our friends over at Knuckle Rumbler. At Volstead Lounge and Hotel Vegas you’ll find the Amazing Peligrosa All-Stars with DJ Orion Garcia leading the charge, along with El Tule, Migrant Kids, Chorizo Funk, y mas. They’ll also have street food, piñatas, games, and photos.  Tickets are just $7, but enter to win our contest, because going to a show for free means you have more money to buy your friends tequila shots. Ole!

To enter:

1. Follow @theyayornaynow and @knucklerumbler on Twitter
2. Email your name and phone number to (mynameinthebyline)@theyayornay.com

Good luck!

SXSW 2012 Recap: My Week in Heaven and Hell

Wednesday, March 21st, 2012

Another year of SX has come and gone and as always it never disappoints. I can’t say this was the best year for me as my trip was doomed from the start. A missed flight out of New York forced me to arrive an entire day and a half late missing the super secret surprise set at Belmont Lounge where 2 Chainz brought out Big Sean and Kanye West. Followed by airport drama in San Antonio, a couple hundred in cabs, buses and hitching a ride with a stranger. Actually three strangers by the end of it. Lost my purse the first night I was there, that basically contained everything I owned, and almost got into a fight with a super random old lady over my ex boyfriend. Let’s just say if it wasn’t for great friends, the kindness of strangers and some super schmoozing, I would have had a disastrous week.

I’m on my Delta (worst airline ever) flight now and wanted to give y’all a recap of my weekend. As usual there was no shortness of DJs. I ran into at least 15 of the DJs I connect with in Texas and all had several showcases throughout the week. Big shout outs to Abe the Assassin who puts a lot of great DJs on during SXSW and Mike Swing who hosts a ton of them at his house. My friends at F.A.M. management threw a huge DJ showcase on Wednesday night (third year running) and heavy hitters such as Just Blaze did a set that was watched by Diplo and Pete Wentz.

Thursday night started out super late for me, but I did manage to hit several events. I had to stop in on Platurn’s 45 Party a yearly party featuring real hip-hop heads, lots of break dancers, and straight vinyl sets. I managed to catch a little of my boy Jaycee’s set who as usual never fails because his musical knowledge is rather insane. I hit the Maxim/ Doritos party that featured Snoop Dogg. We rolled up right as they were playing Dogg Pound and saw the massive Doritos billboard vending machine that was plugging their new flavor. Remember SX has become such a beast for brand building… Pretty dope still, considering I have now heard his set three times. He is no surprise at SX; he has become a major regular player in the game who just gets bigger and bigger every year.

Alabama Shakes Are Gonna Shake It Up This Year

Sunday, March 18th, 2012

The Alabama Shakes made their entrance to South by Southwest via the famous Austin City Limits PBS show. The venue is the new Moody Theatre in Austin’s 2nd Street District. As always, the place was packed. Was it with people waiting to get on television? Or were they waiting to hear one of the best shows of the festival?

Wanna know what made these guys so great? Do ya? Are you really that person who hasn’t heard of them yet? Don’t be. Keep reading!

Tour Food: Lousiville, Kentucky

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

When I was nineteen and playing on small tours around Texas and a few other states in the southwestern area (the first three people that call in with the correct states win a free trip to Six Flags!), eating at Taco Bell for every meal was absolutely suitable, but seven years later the sodium and tastelessness of bean burritos with no onions and extra red sauce has started to get to me. I want to eat like an adult. Personally, I feel like I already eat like a normal human being at home (the opposite of whatever Lil Wayne eats), so why shouldn’t I eat that way when I’m on the road? It’s rare that you get a home cooked meal when you’re driving ten hours to play to thirty people in Richmond, Virginia (more on that later), and it’s even more rare that you get to make a meal for yourself. At this very moment I would murder any hipster that you pointed out to me as long as you promised me the use of your kitchen to make stir fry or even just some breakfast tacos. Enough with the hypotheticals and on to the actuals.

Burning Man (Dr. Seuss?) Propaganda Is Simply Adorbs

Friday, January 13th, 2012

Whatever you think about the Burning Man festival that takes place in Black Rock Desert, NV, each Labor Day, you’ll surely be pleased by this video made by Teddy Saunders. He and his cohorts at the festival attempt to recreate Dr. Seuss’ famous Oh, The Places You’ll Go! using the celebrants and fantastical art installations to tell the story. Who else could properly narrate the whimsical author IRL?

TheYayorNay and Knuckle Rumbler Present: Pro Nails

Tuesday, October 18th, 2011

If you’ve spent any time on our site, you likely know that we are pretty much whores for good nail art. Nails are the fashion accessory of 2011, from rub on polishes to mattes to rhinestones to marbling, the ladies are doing it up big, and more often than not, they’re doing it for themselves. Naturally, when Knuckle Rumbler asked us to host this party with them, once we stopped fanning ourselves and weeping tears of joy, we said ‘yes.’ Join us at the North Door in Austin, TX on Wednesday, October 26 to get your nails did, sip on cocktails, and listen to a soundtrack laid down by DJ I Wanna Be Her.
