Another year of SX has come and gone and as always it never disappoints. I can’t say this was the best year for me as my trip was doomed from the start. A missed flight out of New York forced me to arrive an entire day and a half late missing the super secret surprise set at Belmont Lounge where 2 Chainz brought out Big Sean and Kanye West. Followed by airport drama in San Antonio, a couple hundred in cabs, buses and hitching a ride with a stranger. Actually three strangers by the end of it. Lost my purse the first night I was there, that basically contained everything I owned, and almost got into a fight with a super random old lady over my ex boyfriend. Let’s just say if it wasn’t for great friends, the kindness of strangers and some super schmoozing, I would have had a disastrous week.
I’m on my Delta (worst airline ever) flight now and wanted to give y’all a recap of my weekend. As usual there was no shortness of DJs. I ran into at least 15 of the DJs I connect with in Texas and all had several showcases throughout the week. Big shout outs to Abe the Assassin who puts a lot of great DJs on during SXSW and Mike Swing who hosts a ton of them at his house. My friends at F.A.M. management threw a huge DJ showcase on Wednesday night (third year running) and heavy hitters such as Just Blaze did a set that was watched by Diplo and Pete Wentz.
Thursday night started out super late for me, but I did manage to hit several events. I had to stop in on Platurn’s 45 Party a yearly party featuring real hip-hop heads, lots of break dancers, and straight vinyl sets. I managed to catch a little of my boy Jaycee’s set who as usual never fails because his musical knowledge is rather insane. I hit the Maxim/ Doritos party that featured Snoop Dogg. We rolled up right as they were playing Dogg Pound and saw the massive Doritos billboard vending machine that was plugging their new flavor. Remember SX has become such a beast for brand building… Pretty dope still, considering I have now heard his set three times. He is no surprise at SX; he has become a major regular player in the game who just gets bigger and bigger every year.
