Yo DJ! (10) Featuring P-Nyce

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

As with any business, networking can often be the key to success. Cameron Wright AKA DJ P-Nyce knows this all too well. Often booking quality over quantity gigs and playing with some of the nation’s finest including Diplo, Dave Nada, and Tittsworth, the self described Dilla-head is known for his unique house party style, helping to bring the Baltimore Club sound that he grew up with to the masses of the 3rd Coast. He often takes his love for jazz and blues as inspiration and sites James Brown as his biggest influence. His deep roots in Baltimore Club and hip hop have led P-Nyce to create a unique sound all his own. With a fresh website and marking takeover on the rise and booking lots of national gigs, as well as ones in his current town of Austin, TX, P-Nyce is one to keep an eye out for.

Ladies and Gents, meet P-Nyce!

Yo DJ! (9) Featuring DJ Ku

Monday, April 2nd, 2012

I rarely meet DJs from Florida. Not because they don’t exist, some of the greatest live there (DJ Irie, Jessica Who, and Damian Yancy). I just don’t live there or travel there often so, when I heard DJ KU’s name for the first time, I was immediately intrigued. I have been following DJ Ku’s career since I met him about this time last year. He’s fun, he’s funny, and he’s confident. Besides his ever expanding DJ career, Charles Ku co-founded Dynasty Events, one of Tampa’s premiere event promotion, graphic design, and nightlife marketing management companies. They basically run the game in Tampa and throw the hottest parties with the hottest DJs hosted by the hottest promoters. You get it. He is also a member of F.A.M. Management and recently had two big sets at SXSW with Jayceeoh’s Super 7 and F.A..M. 3RD Year DJ Showcase. We have yet to hear the best from DJ Ku. Stay tuned!

Yo DJ! (8) Featuring DJ Marvel

Thursday, March 15th, 2012

Marvel is one of those characters who just gets it. He is all about making his network his networth. This week is no different for my friend. He is booked all over events in Austin for SXSW including our website’s one year birthday party. I met him last year during the festival. He’s fun, he’s adorable, and he is really talented. He is also 1/4 of  Vancouver’s hottest DJ crew The Freshest. Four partnering DJs started this crew almost five years ago as a way to expand their careers, play at the hottest clubs and create good music. So far, they are making major moves and are currently producing tracks for some of Canada’s up and coming hip hop artist. They also just launched a new series on their site featuring live DJ  sets and instruments. Pretty dope.

Yo DJ! (7) Featuring DJ Real Juicy

Friday, March 2nd, 2012

Ever heard of a little old website called White Folks Get Crunk? The website that has taken the DJ community by storm and averages about 30k hits a day was started by my next featured DJ, Real Juicy. It’s a website and forum for DJs to share mixes and chat.  He is part of the up and coming F.A.M. crew headed by my boy and fellow DJ, Marcus Sims out of L.A. Lots of up and coming up cats are added to this label as of late, and it is really starting to make waves in the scene. I have not had the pleasure of meeting Juicy J. yet but from what I have heard, read and listened to, I am the one missing out. This DJ and his site are going places. Stay tuned fam!

Meet Real Juicy.

Hometown: Peoria, IL

Residencies: #NoGaga Thursdays at Cam’s (Peoria), Locker Room Boom (Peoria), Sushi Saturday (Peoria), White Folks Get Crunk Fridays (East Atlanta)

Style of DJ/ genres: White Folks Get Crunk

According to J’s website and the culture in general, White Folks Get Crunk means “Its really sort of just a play on words. Crunk derived from dirty south rap for cranking it up long ago. Then one day Lil Jon brings us a whole bunch of tunes in the same style that make it to top 40 radio and the crunk genre is born. We could argue now about the state of the actual genre of crunk music but it no longer has the presence it once did on pop radio. Remember when you heard Usher’s ‘Yeah’ every single day? In its passing Lil Jon has moved on somewhat and if you notice his last few big records, even sense the inception of this site, have been heavily dance/electro influenced. Check out Pitbull’s ‘The Anthem’ (Samples Calabria which has wound up in even Wal-Mart commercials) and ‘Go Crazy’ both featuring Lil Jon and are pretty much loops of classic tracks. My bet is these trace back to Lil Jon or Pitbull’s notice of the whole mashup culture which are also a large portion of this site. Go Crazy samples the same record, ‘Cream’, following the uber-popular mashup with Soulja Boy’s ‘Crank Dat’ by Dave Nada. The list goes on and on with these songs being made both mashup style and now released commercially. Also you will find a slew of Lil Jon voice samples in probably about 40% of B’more remixed tracks these days. It is almost as signature as the drum samples used. So in conclusion 1) We are not racist 2) I have never ever had a person with any skin color other than white think it was inappropriate (every black person’s reaction I have received actually was quite good!) and 3) White people get crunk to a different kind of music.

How did you get started as a DJ? Saved enough money from stupid jobs when I was 16 to buy decks. I guess before that I was making tapes by using two cassette players lol. That goes back to when I was in like 3rd or 4th grade. Read More→

Yo DJ! (6) Featuring DJ Jaycee

Tuesday, February 14th, 2012

DJ Jaycee and I met about 5 years ago when he was visiting Austin from Atlanta. H and my boyfriend at the time go back about ten years. At first I though Jaycee was shy and reserved, but as I got to know him better I realized he is someone that just takes it all in. He is incredibly well knowledged in music and although he is known for hip-hop, his range is very deep. He is world traveled. He has great style. I was immediately intrigued by him. He was Ludacris’ DJ for the past decade (they ended their time together this past September so Jaycee could focus on his own branding) and on many occasions of us doing too many Patron or Three Olives Grape shots (our poison of choice), I wanted to ask him groupie tales but I didn’t have the balls. Jaycee is a member of Atlanta’s elite DJ camp, The Aphiliates and lastly, he’s a power mixer for Atlanta’s most popular station V-103.

Yo DJ! (5) Featuring Mike Swing

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Teddy bears, check. Temporary tattoos, check. Blow pops, check. Let’s say Mike Swing is one of those incredibly prepared and meticulously organized DJs; all of his records in the appropriately filed crates according to genre, all of his t’s crossed and i’s dotted before he begins his sets. Mike is one of those old school DJs who has been doing it long enough that he doesn’t have to perfect his craft, yet he wants to. He could probably do his sets with his eyes closed, yet he is constantly adding to his vault and studying new music. That’s what sets him apart from a lot of DJs and that’s what’s gained him the respect of club owners and his peers alike. Maybe that’s why Austin360.com voted him Best Club DJ 4 Years in a row. He is not only a great DJ but a great guy all around. During SXSW his house turns into a fraternity of some of the countries best DJs all couch crashing and sharing music (including DJ M, Jayceeoh, DJ Marvel, and more). His Sunday Brunch (the first and best in Austin) set precedent for what is now the biggest day of the week to go out and just get plain stupid. Mike needs to patent the term Sunday Funday. He digs deep in the vault and no one, I mean no one knows how to make people dance at noon on a Sunday to Ace of Base or Ghost Town DJs, La Roux or maybe a little Rick Ross. He truly knows the definition of working a room.

Side Note: Mike and I met 6 years ago at a weekly gig he had at a club in Austin called Tambaleo, I was bartending, he was DJing. We were instant friends.  We have become incredibly close. As much as I respect him as a DJ, I value his friendship more than he can even imagine. We have been through some very tough times together (saved me after a really sad breakup). Like I said, all around GREAT guy.

Yo DJ! (3) Featuring Risk One

Tuesday, January 17th, 2012

I have followed Risk One’s career very closely this past year since our chance encounter.  We shared a couch during SXSW last year–it sounds much dirtier than it was, but it was definitely the quickest way I have ever made a friend. I had heard his name in DJ circles I run in, we have several mutual friends and his mixes are pretty popular amongst DJs and party-goers. His brunch set (part of Mike Swing’s Annual SXSW Funky Brunch) blew me away. It was so clean. Funny thing is, I asked him about it later that night and he didn’t feel the same way. He is a modest DJ, but he knows he’s good, if that makes any sense. The dude really doesn’t have much to be modest about, last year alone his career went places some DJs have never gone. He was in China for 3 weeks, played SXSW, and was nominated by Red Bull and McDonald’s to represent with the countries finest. He was a busy, busy spinster.

One thing about Risk that impresses me most is he does his own bookings. He is in the same travel rotation as a lot of Deckstar and Skam artists, but he is making his own way. Risk sends out a regular newsletter usually linking his latest mix. Last year he released Robot Ears in 3 Volumes. He also has a web, logo design, and event flyer company called R1 Creative. Most of his projects right now are designing for others in his business because to Risk branding is everything.

Guys and gals, meet my pal Risk One!

Yo DJ! (2) Featuring Abe the Assassin

Tuesday, January 10th, 2012

There is so much I can say about my buddy Abe the Assassin. His personality and love for his craft  are almost as big as the giant fro he rocks. I met Abe a few years back when he was a mixer for local Austin radio station Hot 93.3 (RIP 93.3). It was a collection of very skillled and diverse DJs who, because it was a hip-hop station, had to play hip-hop, but that didn’t keep Abe from being incredibly diverse. His career has flourished since our meeting four years ago, and he now is the main DJ for the Carmack empire, a group of investors and club owners including “The Bachelor,” Brad Womack. He is also a member of Free Agent Management, based out of LA, that reps some of the hottest up and coming DJs including Barry Carew, Ku, and veteran DJ Scribble. He has also produced a very popular local SXSW DJ Showcase that is going into its third year, mixing a ton of local DJs from very different backgrounds and styles; it’s been a staple kick-off for the industry heading into the music fest. Abe mixes things you would think aren’t possible and finds interesting ways to appease crowds through things like rock ballads and salsa.
