It’s days like today that I can say I am proud to be a New Yorker. The foundation for New York being the ultimate come-back kid since the tragic events on September 11, 2001 have now been laid. This morning, workers put in the steel beams that will make One World Trade Center, the building that serves as a monument to that day, reach 1250 feet. That is the height of the highest observation deck of the Empire State Building, which is currently the tallest building in Manhattan.

The project’s completion won’t be at least for another year and then will be over 1750 feet. Once done, the “Freedom Tower” will be the second tallest building in the US.

Moontower Comedy Festival-It Was Funny

Sunday, April 29th, 2012

Some of the ladies of TheYayorNay had a little too much fun last weekend as the first ever Moontower Comedy and Oddity Festival settled its funny fanny into the seats and streets of Austin. Laurie and Madison laughed and drank their way through the festival, but managed to pull together this review for you:

Laurie:

We started the weekend together in line for the early Aziz Ansari show at The Paramount. Poor Madison had to leave after the opener so that she could go see Bon Iver tape a show at ACL. Poor thing. The show started with Ansari coming over the loud speaker, dictating the evening’s rules through comedy and profanity, hidden by curtains, his Oz complex shone through in a way rarely seen outside of a wizard’s chamber. He let the audience know that no video, caricature artist booths, and no yelling (“shut your fucking mouth”) would be allowed during the show. Sullen, I put away my colored pencils, oversized drawing paper, and camera and kicked back to watch the evening unfold.

Chelsea Peretti, writer from “Parks and Rec,” opened the show. She talked about dating, “Basketball Wives,” huge dick holes (and ear holes and mouth holes), rape whistles, and Hitler. Overall, her performance was entertaining, though her surfer impressions made me feel awkward in my pants. And not in the good way.  My favorite, though, was her joke about how women can’t eat bananas in public because it’s too sexual; she takes the joke to a beautiful place and it kills me every time I hear it.

Looking almost unrecognizable from the dork in a kayaking helmet, shilling for American Express, Ansari mounted the stage in a 3 piece suit, looking dapper as hell with the added touch of a white boutonniere and an extra ounce of swag. Frankly, I spent entirely too much time listening and laughing and did a pretty poor job of taking notes. But what does it really matter? He’s a funny mother fucker and if you already love him, you’re going to go see him when he comes to your town. If you don’t already love him, go see him anyway.

SXSW Disaster Comedy: The Funny Lives!!

Boom... Disaster

Last night at a new downtown venue called The New Movement, SXSW made with the funny with the Disaster Comedy showcase. Stand ups from all over the country came together to sling punchlines at a packed house and talk an awful lot about cats…

With a line up of fresh talent, Disaster Comedy delivered as one of the high points of my SXSW week. Honestly, it’s kind of tough to write about because I keep chuckling to myself whenever I think about it. It was a fantastic stand up comedy party, and the free beer from Ranger Creek didn’t hurt at all. Read More→

Ball So Hard Fresh Prince Wanna Fine Me!

Wednesday, March 7th, 2012

Ahhh… this made my day. It never gets old listening to this song, but adding Will Smith to the mix takes this ish to a whole new level. I mean how ahead of his time was he? You’re welcome.

NYC City Spotlight: W.i.P.

Monday, February 27th, 2012

So as a new New Yorker, I am constantly discovering  fresh things about this city that turn me on. After getting lost leaving a friend’s Wall Street apartment the other day and laughing at the fact I ended up at the Statue of Liberty, he said that he admired my “fresh perspective and wide-eyed fascination with his city.” What’s not to admire? This city is full of characters and misadventures. This past Friday was no different.

Specialty brew sales have been on the rise this year with sales of smaller, craft brews rising 3% in 2011. Sales of big box beers fell by more than half between 2007 and 2010. This means it’s time to stop drinking the cheap stuff that tastes like pee-water. Gone are the days of throwing them back just to catch a buzz. Today’s beer drinkers are drinking for taste, the thrill of a beer buzz comes as an added bonus.

Tour Food: Lousiville, Kentucky

Sunday, January 22nd, 2012

When I was nineteen and playing on small tours around Texas and a few other states in the southwestern area (the first three people that call in with the correct states win a free trip to Six Flags!), eating at Taco Bell for every meal was absolutely suitable, but seven years later the sodium and tastelessness of bean burritos with no onions and extra red sauce has started to get to me. I want to eat like an adult. Personally, I feel like I already eat like a normal human being at home (the opposite of whatever Lil Wayne eats), so why shouldn’t I eat that way when I’m on the road? It’s rare that you get a home cooked meal when you’re driving ten hours to play to thirty people in Richmond, Virginia (more on that later), and it’s even more rare that you get to make a meal for yourself. At this very moment I would murder any hipster that you pointed out to me as long as you promised me the use of your kitchen to make stir fry or even just some breakfast tacos. Enough with the hypotheticals and on to the actuals.

Dude goes H.A.MMMM on NYC Subway

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

Ok, I can’t take credit for this one, my girl and fellow writer Sherita Ben turned me on to this magic earlier today. You are going to laugh so hard, you will cry. Not gonna lie, though, I danced exactly like this dude the first 1,000 times I jammed this in my whip. I really, really hope I run into this guy on the subway. I’m gonna ask him to cover “Rolling in the Deep” by Adele. WHOAAAA!!! Let’s go Jayyy

Christmas miracle? Two Headed Baby born in Brazil

Thursday, December 22nd, 2011

It is very bizarre and very rare, but a two headed baby was born in Brazil this month. The mother, who had an hour long cesarean to birth the baby is doing well, as is the baby. The baby who has two names, Emanoel and Jesus share a heart, lungs, liver, and pelvis. They both have separate functioning brains which make the decision to remove one of the heads difficult; therefore, they are keeping both.

“If both their brains are functioning, how are we going to choose which head to remove?” said Neila Dahas, director of the Santa Casa hospital where the baby was born. “We are not considering the possibility of surgery. What we’ve got to think about at this moment is to maintain the children in good condition and see how they will develop.”

Although very rare, this has happened at least 14 documented times in the past 200 years. It is called dicaphalic conjoined twins.  Earlier this year it happened in Brazil but shortly after removing one of the heads, both died. Sad.

Let’s hope for a Christmas miracle that these two survive.

Watch a video of the most famous two headed twins Abigail and Brittnay Hensel, after the jump.

Jen’s Holiday Gift Guide!

Friday, December 16th, 2011

Tis the season for giving and receiving. I like to partake in both. So here is a simple guide of some of the things I will be giving and hopefully getting.

If you know anything about me, I base my entire life around The Law of Attraction. It all started a few years ago when I read The Secret by Rhonda Byrne. The Secret basically teaches us that our lives are based solely around our way of thinking. Positive thoughts bring about positive results, etc. It truly has changed by life and I often read and reference it daily so I don’t lose track. The author has released a sequel to the book that, even if you haven’t read the first can still help you in your daily life. It is called The Power.

“The life of your dreams has always been closer to you than you realized, because The Power – to have everything good in life – is inside you.To create anything, to change anything, all it takes is just one thing… POWER.”

I am definitely giving this book this year to a few of my friends. Read More→
