President Obama endorses same sex marriage

Wednesday, May 9th, 2012

He just came right out and said it…  Obama came out on ABC and just said that he thinks same sex couples should be able to get married. None of this “civil unions” jargon. No shucking and jiving to hold onto more conservative voters. He just dropped it like a microphone after roasting a rival MC in a freestyle battle.

Obama told ABC News that, after reflection, he had “concluded that for me personally it is important for me to go ahead and affirm that I think same sex couples should be able to get married.”

Then he said he had an “evolution” of his views on the issue. He actually used the word “EVOLUTION!” It has been long established that President Obama not only has a sense of humor, but is not above taking both overt and veiled shots at both people and institutions ranging form Republican opponents to Kanye West. Typically, groups that oppose gay marriage are not fans of evolution either.

Right now, President Barack Obama is the CM Punk of Politics.

Whether or not you agree with his policies, the POTUS got swaaaaaag.

This week, President Obama “slow jammed the news” with The Roots on “Late Night With Jimmy Fallon,” then gave a shout out to Young Jeezy at the Presidential Correspondents’ Dinner. Now the Republicans are painting the Prezy of the United Steezy as “too cool.” Read More→

With a bunch of extremely crazy anti-women bills being proposed this week, women have taken on a new strategy in their fight for reproductive freedom – trolling the Facebook pages of prominent right wing politicians with “graphically detailed descriptions of their genital maladies. Think period problems, concerns about strange bumps, requests for fertility advice, pregnancy scares, and more.”

Prop 8 Reversed, Declared Unconstitutional; Yay!

Tuesday, February 7th, 2012

Breaking News: A three-judge panel of the 9th U.S. Circuit Court of Appeals has issued its long-awaited opinion on whether Proposition 8 violates the civil rights of gay men and lesbians.

Proposition 8 was a 2008 California ballot measure that banned same-sex marriage. In August 2010, a federal judge struck down the ban, which was left in place during the appeals process. The proposition was declared unconstitutional this morning.

Wait…what the hell is going on here?

Media outlets are infinitely confusing. Choosing to paint our President and possible contenders, the leaders of the country, as petty thugs who fist fight sends the wrong message to, well, everyone, including Americans. I suppose it would at least be more understandable if Gingrich and Romney were the focus in the fight (but why choose such violent imagery anyway? Is Romney missing a tooth?), but to throw Obama in? He hasn’t done much to get his hands dirty in the campaign – so far.

SOPA Roundup: Gone But Not Forgotten

Saturday, January 28th, 2012

Good job, internets! We effectively told Congress that they better shut down SOPA and PIPA and fast. But it’s not over. Although the bills have been shelved for now, they are undergoing revisions and will be all up in your face again come February.

European countries are facing similar censorship issues. The Anti-Counterfeiting Trade Agreement, or ACTA, which is ostensibly an international copyright agreement, is being shoved quietly through many European Parliaments this year. Yesterday in Poland, the awesomest of leaders showed up in Anon-style Guy Fawkes masks to protest the passage of the bill. Read More→

Reddit, Boing Boing, The Daily What, Mozilla, and other big internet sites are “going dark” January 18 in opposition to SOPA and PIPA, the pending US legislation that creates a punishing Internet censorship regime and exports it to the rest of the world.

Boing Boing explains:

“We could never co-exist with a SOPA world: we could not ever link to another website unless we were sure that no links to anything that infringes copyright appeared on that site. So in order to link to a URL on LiveJournal or WordPress or Twitter or Blogspot, we’d have to first confirm that no one had ever made an infringing link, anywhere on that site. Making one link would require checking millions (even tens of millions) of pages, just to be sure that we weren’t in some way impinging on the ability of five Hollywood studios, four multinational record labels, and six global publishers to maximize their profits. If we failed to take this precaution, our finances could be frozen, our ad broker forced to pull ads from our site, and depending on which version of the bill goes to the vote, our domains confiscated, and, because our server is in Canada, our IP address would be added to a US-wide blacklist that every ISP in the country would be required to censor.”

You guys, this is totally important.

Kelly Clarkson’s Stronger soared 192% from #41 to #14 on #41 on Amazon’s “Movers & Shakers in Music” list this week after she tweeted, “I love Ron Paul,” and “He’s got my vote.” This is particularly striking since her fans later blasted her on Twitter for her support. Many of Clarkson’s Twitter followers immediately demanded that she retract her statement, but so far she’s refused.

Fans might be upset about her endorsing the Presidential hopeful, who is recently under fire for the series of racist and homophobic newsletters published under his name in the 1980s and 1990s. Read More→

Google Zeitgeist 2011: How Did We Do?

Thursday, December 15th, 2011

With bazillions of end of the year “top” lists stuffing email inboxes and news feeds like Santa’s snail mail box, a biggie came out today that is actually worth a quick look: the Google Zeitgeist list for 2011. The list is a top 10 of the most searched terms for the year. Let’s see how, in TheYayorNay’s first year, we stacked up with reporting the things that people found interesting enough to type into that search box. I’m Feeling Lucky.

1. Rebecca Black: Oh, RB and her crazy ass song that stands as a monument to the power of YouTube. Yep, 167 million views since its release in mid-March. We covered the single when it first came out, as well as when it was pulled from YouTube in June. We mentioned her in a couple more posts, but I think my favorite was the recent post about Rick Perry’s godawful campaign video that officially beat out “Friday” for the most hated video on YouTube. Ha. Read More→

Rick Perry felt the wrath of the internet this week after the release of his latest campaign commercial:

At the time of this posting, the YouTube video has 12,722 likes and 488,648 dislikes – beating Rebecca Black’s “Friday” as the most hated video on the internet. High fives, everybody! Though we all love the like and dislike option (TheYayOrNay, w00t), the best community revenge came in the form of memes, spoofs, and photoshops. See some of the best after the jump.  Read More→

Herman Cain, pizza proprietor, notorious sexual harrasser and Republican presidential candidate, has suspended his campaign for the White House as of Saturday, December 3. What does it even mean to suspend a presidential campaign? The New York Times contends that by “suspending his candidacy, as opposed to saying that he was quitting the race or ending his bid, Mr. Cain maintained his ability to accept money to pay for his campaign so far and to finance the new venture that he called his Plan B: to travel the country promoting his tax and foreign policy plans. If Mr. Cain had decided to formally close his campaign organization, he would not be able to use donations that may come in.”

“As of today, with a lot of prayer and soul searching, I am suspending my presidential campaign,” Mr. Cain said at a rally here, surrounded by supporters chanting his name. “Because of the continued distractions, the continued hurt caused on me and my family, not because we are not fighters. Not because I’m not a fighter.”
