In America, even the geniuses are idiots.

Yale quarterback Patrick Witt is a very talented young man. This Saturday, he’s scheduled to lead Yale in his career finale against visiting Harvard in the 128th edition of “The Game,” which is important to Harvard/Yale fans and alum, and not really anyone else. He’s also scheduled to be interviewed at Emory University in Atlanta as one of 212 finalists for the Rhodes Scholarship at the same time, and the interview can’t be rescheduled. The Rhodes Scholarship is considered  to be the world’s most prestigious scholarship. But who cares about your scholastic potential when it comes to a football rivalry, amirite? Read More→

NO SHOCK(ey). EMILY MAYNARD IN THE SPOTLIGHT, AGAIN!

Thursday, October 6th, 2011

This may surprise you because I watch A LOT of crap TV, but I really don’t like non-competition style reality TV.

There are a few shows in particular that I despise – “Jersey Shore,” “The Real World,” and “The Bachelor” franchise.

With the exception of “Jersey Shore” which has been ridiculous from the start, the reason for my disgust is that as these shows progress, the participants get more and more fragile and F’d up. It’s kind of sad, really, the way TV execs are preying on these pathetic peeps. However, when someone makes the decision to appear on one of these shows and then cries about all the attention, I have to call bullshit.

And, THAT, is why I can’t stand Emily Maynard. I thought she would go away now that she and Brad are done for good. Wrong. Now she’s dating Carolina Panther tight end Jeremy Shockey. Read More→

Boxing’s Fight With Race

Thursday, September 22nd, 2011

As much as the sport of boxing is struggling to stay relevant in the 21st century, there never seems to be a shortage of entertainment whenever Floyd Mayweather Jr. is preparing for his next fight. Whether you love the guy or hate him for his general arrogance or the way he flaunts around his money, you can’t deny that he is single handedly keeping the sport on life support. His fight this past weekend against Victor Ortiz was marred with controversy and a hilarious post fight interview, but the more fascinating story is the racial tensions surrounding the event itself. And while it’s no secret that race has been a constant variable in the realm of American sports, it is exemplified no better in any other sport than boxing. This is nothing new, however. The unspoken rule when watching two boxers of different races square off has always been to root for the guy who more closely resembles our own ethnic background.

Since the days of Jack Johnson and his unapologetic fondness for white women, which cast society into a frenzy over the dangers of the black athlete, it was a number one priority to find someone who could defeat him and prove once and for all that white athletes were superior. Not just for the sport itself, but for the symbolism of their continued dominance in American history. Same story with Muhammad Ali, another brash and cocky fighter who was better than anything the sport had seen at the time. And sure, you can blame it on his unwillingness to fight in the war as well as his association with the Nation of Islam that sparked the population’s hatred for him, but conservative white America was never a fan of his to begin with. The fact that he dominated most anybody he faced was really the cause for everyone to pray and pray for his downfall. Read More→

Serena Gets Jiggy With It to Trey Songz!

Monday, September 12th, 2011

Poor Serena, she is not having a great week. First, she received a code violation for screaming “come on” in the middle of her match at the 2011 Women’s US Open.  She went on to lose the tournament.

Then yesterday this video started circling the web. Some insiders say it’s a man in a wig, but the body and face really look like Serena. Either way, the video is hilarious! I have watched it repeatedly.

Get it girl.

Panthers Owner Says NO Tats for his Team

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

Ok, in all reality Jerry Richardson, owner of the Carolina Panthers can’t say no to tattoos considering a ton of his teams players already have them. Look at Jeremy Shockey and Steve Smith. But, if he has it his way, number 1 draft pick Cam Newton who currently has no tattoos or piercings will have to keep it that way.

In an interview with PBS’ Charlie Rose, Richardson recounted a conversation he had with Newton when he commented that Newton “was dressed perfectly” and asked him if he had “any tattoos” or “any piercings” When Newton said no, Richardson said “we want to keep it that way.” He then commented on his quarterback’s “nice haircut.”

I highly doubt that Cam would get fired if he broke this unofficial rule. Maybe disappoint the owner a bit, but hey I am pretty sure he is more worried about Newton getting the team to the playoffs than some ink.

Shots Fired At Tiger?

Tuesday, August 9th, 2011

This past Sunday marked the return of Tiger Woods to the PGA Tour after years of scandal, failure on the golf course, and injuries. For the first time since 1997 his ranking took a big hit, and he now sits ranked somewhere around 20th in the world. Though it was the major talk of the golf world for the weekend, there was also a side story attracting a good amount of attention, as well. This was also the first tournament that Tiger would play in since he and his caddie for over 10 years, Steve Williams, separated. It just so happens that Steve Williams now caddies for another golfer, Adam Scott, who was atop the leaderboard for most of the tournament and eventually walked away with the win.

Things got a little more interesting after the tournament during an interview with the caddie. Before we move on to exactly what he said, it’s important that we address the issue of CBS Sports actually interviewing a caddie. I always thought they were the equivalent to an unwanted step child. They’re there be seen, not heard. Read More→

Beloved entertainer Pee-Wee Herman miraculously showed up at the Dallas Cowboys Training Camp last Thursday. Most people assume he went to shake hands and pose for pictures with players and fans.

Those people are wrong.

This is merely the start of something much larger that is going down that will rock the Cowboys franchise at its core.

Tell me if I’m wrong, but when was that last time anticipation for NFL football has been this high? Personally, for me, I haven’t had this feeling of excitement prior to a season since…. honestly, never. Maybe it’s due to the fact that as Americans we thought OUR sport, (American) football, might not have existed for a full season. Even though the threat of the lockout lasting for a full season wasn’t high, it’s just the idea of NO football. Goodness, could you imagine?

This feeling of anticipation for the NFL season is not only due to the possibility of no football but also highly due to the off-season activity after the lockout ended. Teams wasted no time in free agency, making trades, signing, and releasing players, not to mention a war of words between rivals that adds to all the drama of the soap opera we know as the National Football League.

This off-season has been pretty fun to watch, and over the next few days I will analyze and preview the teams I feel made the most noise this off-season and WILL make the most noise this upcoming season, verbally and physically. Stay tuned…

Michael Vick and VY in practice...The "Dream Team"

By default, the Eagles have been deemed themselves the NFL’s “Dream Team” and the league’s version of the Miami Heat this preseason… and for good reason.

The Longhorn Network stirs controversy

Wednesday, August 3rd, 2011

Big 12 officials raise questions on the possibility of an unfair advantage given given to Texas by the launching of The Longhorn Network with ESPN on August 26th.

So the Big 12 is hating on the University of Texas at Austin…what’s new?

Now here are the logistics: ESPN struck a lucrative deal with the University of Texas worth $300 million over 20 years to create The Longhorn Network. According to ESPN, the network is set to feature two exclusive football games, eight men’s basketball games, women’s basketball coverage of games not televised elsewhere, Olympic sports coverage, and many other forms of UT sports programming.

The Big 10 Conference also has its own network, but the University of Texas is the only Division 1 school to have achieved a deal of this magnitude. Read More→

YES…We’re Ready For Some Football!

Friday, July 29th, 2011

With the end of the lockout Monday, there hasn’t been a lack of activity involving free agents and trades in the NFL. Teams who are waiting in the wind to make moves are missing out on an allotment of big name players. With so little time between the end of the lockout and the beginning of the season, it was expected that there would be a frenzy to get a number of available players signed. Some teams have made it a priority to secure players who would return from the previous year, while others have taken it upon themselves to make a splash by adding new talent to the roster.

The most notable acquisitions have come courtesy of the New England Patriots. After having a 14-2 record last year, they’ve upgraded the roster by adding a few veteran Pro Bowlers in Chad (I’m not gonna call him Ochocinco) Johnson and professional underachiever Albert Haynesworth for virtually peanuts on the dollar. Even though Haynesworth was cancerous in the locker room for the Washington Redskins last year, if anybody can get his best game out of him, it’s Bill Belichick. This team is going to be very scary and I fully expect Tom Brady to have another one of his great seasons. If I had to pick a favorite to win the Super Bowl at this point, it would be these guys.
